How tarot birth cards are calculated
This calculator uses the method popularized by tarot author Mary K. Greer. Add the month, day and full year of your birth. Then add the digits of that total, and keep going until you reach a number of 21 or less. That number is your Personality card. Add its digits once more to find your Soul card.
Your Personality card describes how you meet the world: your style, drive and the way others see you. Your Soul card is quieter. It points to the purpose underneath, the lesson you keep circling back to. A total of 1 to 9 gives one card that is both, and a total of 19 gives three: the Sun, the Wheel of Fortune and the Magician.
The nine birth card pairs
Every possible result belongs to one of nine groups, named here by their Soul card. Find yours below.
The Sun & Wheel of Fortune & The Magician The Creator
The Sun, the Wheel of Fortune and the Magician. Yours is the energy of making things happen: ideas become plans, and plans become real. You are at your best when you trust your own will and take the first step.
Gifts: Initiative, self-expression, resourcefulness, charisma and a talent for being in the right place at the right time.
Lessons: Finishing what you start, sharing the spotlight, and staying steady when luck turns.
Judgement & Justice & The High Priestess The Intuitive
Judgement, Justice and the High Priestess. You know things before you can explain them. You are drawn to truth, fairness and a sense of calling, and you often hear an inner voice others miss.
Gifts: Intuition, discernment, a strong sense of fairness, quiet wisdom and the ability to keep a confidence.
Lessons: Trusting your knowing out loud, going easy on self-judgment, and not withdrawing when life gets noisy.
The World & The Hanged Man & The Empress The Nurturer
The World, the Hanged Man and the Empress. You bring things to life, whether that is a home, a project or a person's confidence. You see from unusual angles and know that some things only bloom with patience.
Gifts: Creativity, generosity, abundance, empathy and a gift for seeing the bigger picture.
Lessons: Receiving as well as giving, letting go of waiting for the perfect moment, and calling a cycle complete.
Death & The Emperor The Builder
Death and the Emperor. You build lasting structures and lead with a steady hand, and you understand that real change sometimes means clearing the ground first. Endings make room for what you create next.
Gifts: Leadership, reliability, vision, resilience and the courage to transform.
Lessons: Loosening control, welcoming change instead of bracing against it, and leading with warmth.
Temperance & The Hierophant The Teacher
Temperance and the Hierophant. You are a natural guide who blends wisdom with balance. People come to you for perspective, and you have a gift for turning experience into something others can learn from.
Gifts: Patience, balance, teaching, healing, loyalty and respect for meaningful tradition.
Lessons: Questioning the rules you inherited, avoiding all-or-nothing swings, and practising what you preach.
The Devil & The Lovers The Lover
The Devil and the Lovers. Your path runs through connection, choice and desire. You feel deeply and love fully, and your growth comes from choosing what you truly value rather than what merely holds you.
Gifts: Passion, devotion, charm, honesty about desire and a talent for bringing people together.
Lessons: Healthy boundaries, releasing attachments that limit you, and making choices from your values.
The Tower & The Chariot The Achiever
The Tower and the Chariot. You move forward with drive and determination, and you are not afraid to tear down what isn't working. Breakthroughs follow you, and so does momentum once you choose a direction.
Gifts: Willpower, focus, courage, honesty and the ability to rise quickly after a setback.
Lessons: Steering rather than forcing, slowing down enough to feel, and trusting that not every shake-up is a crisis.
The Star & Strength The Hopeful Heart
The Star and Strength. Your power is gentle but unshakeable. You inspire others with hope, meet hard moments with courage and compassion, and have a way of helping people believe in themselves.
Gifts: Inner strength, compassion, optimism, healing and a calm, encouraging presence.
Lessons: Letting others carry their own weight, quieting self-doubt, and refilling your own well.
The Moon & The Hermit The Seeker
The Moon and the Hermit. You look beneath the surface for meaning. Imaginative and deeply intuitive, you find wisdom in quiet and solitude, then light the way for others with what you discover.
Gifts: Insight, imagination, introspection, wisdom and a talent for guiding others.
Lessons: Coming back out of the cave, telling intuition from anxiety, and sharing what you know.
Your tarot year card
To find the card for any year, use your birth month and day with that year instead of your birth year. For April 7 in 2026: 4 + 7 + 2026 = 2037, which reduces to 12 (The Hanged Man). Your year card sets a theme from one birthday to the next. The calculator above shows yours for 2026.
Birth card FAQ
What is a tarot birth card?
Your birth cards are the Major Arcana cards that come from your date of birth. Most people have two: a Personality card, which describes how you show up in the world, and a Soul card, which points to your deeper purpose. They don't change, so many people treat them as a lifelong theme.
How do you calculate your tarot birth card?
Add your birth month, day and full year together, then add the digits of the total. Keep adding digits until you reach 21 or less: that is your Personality card. Add its two digits to get your Soul card. For April 7, 1969: 4 + 7 + 1969 = 1980, then 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 = 18 (The Moon), and 1 + 8 = 9 (The Hermit).
Why do I only have one birth card?
If your total adds up to a single digit (1 to 9), the same card is both your Personality and your Soul card. It is a strong, focused combination rather than a missing card.
Why do some people have three birth cards?
A total of 19 gives three cards: the Sun (19), the Wheel of Fortune (1 + 9 = 10) and the Magician (1 + 0 = 1). People with this combination are said to carry all three energies.
Can The Fool be a birth card?
Not with this method. The Fool is card 0, and a birth date always adds up to at least 1, so the Fool works as the spirit of the whole journey rather than a birth card.
What is a tarot year card?
Your Year card is worked out the same way, but with the current year in place of your birth year. It suggests a theme for your year, running from one birthday to the next, and changes every year.
Are tarot birth cards accurate?
Birth cards are for reflection and entertainment, not prediction. Treat them as a lens for thinking about your strengths and the lessons you keep meeting.
